About the Teacher: Karl Martin, Ph.D.

Dr. Karl Martin is an Emeritus Professor of American Literature at Point Loma Nazarene University where he taught for 27 years. His expertise includes American literature and culture, African American literature, and the intersection of faith and social thought.

His scholarship explores topics such as American evangelicalism, American exceptionalism, Flannery O’Connor, and the relationship between literature and religious experience. Through this work, he brings deep insight into the historical development of the white church in the United States and its role in shaping cultural and social dynamics.

A 1981 graduate of PLNU, Dr. Martin earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He returned to PLNU in 1998, later serving as Chair of the Department of Literature, Journalism, and Modern Languages.
