13th Annual San Diego Interfaith Community Event honoring MLK Jr. Day

This remarkable virtual event will bring together people of different faiths and cultural backgrounds for a wonderful morning of community building, education, and camaraderie. As a community, we will learn from members of the Environmental and Climate Justice Committee (ECJ) with NAACP San Diego and NAACP North San Diego County.

This esteemed panel will weave together the importance of the intersection between Martin Luther King’s mission of justice and the impact of environmental and climate justice on a local and city-wide scale today.

Featured Speakers:

Puja Batra is an ecologist and Principal of Batra Ecological Strategies.  She works to discover, design, and implement equitable solutions that help us solve climate change, build food security, and restore the relationship between humans and the rest of nature. She has worked with international wildlife conservation organizations, as well as local non-profits, government, and community groups. Dr. Batra is based in San Diego, and is a member of the Community Forest Advisory Board to the City of San Diego, NAACP’s Environment and Climate Justice Committee, and other organizations focused on justice and democracy. 

John Brooks is from Oakland, California and is a retired Special Agent with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement. He also worked as a Wildlife Refuge Manager, Wildlife Inspector, Computer Forensic Specialist, and Augmented United States Air Marshall.

In 2012, he founded a non-profit organization, the Nepal Tiger Project, and also ran for a seat in the United States Congress in 2012 and 2020.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Biology and is continuing his work in the conservation field, as a climate advocate with the San Diego based organization, Climate Con.

Sonja Robinson is the first Chair of the Environmental and Climate Justice Committee (ECJ) with NAACP San Diego and NAACP North San Diego County. Sonja has an internet talk radio show, S.U.N (Sustainable Urban Network) addressing environmental justice. The programs on SUN often address issues of sustainability’s intersections with racial, social, economic justice and equity for urban communities to help improve our quality of life (i.e., air pollution, housing justice, energy democracy, food justice, our youth, and more). Her grassroots organizing is derived fundamentally from organizational change development as a consultant with a big 4 firm.
