What We Really Mean When We Talk About Forgiveness: Do We Also Have to Forget? Perspectives FUMCSD Pastors Podcast (S3E48)
Aug 23, 2026

Summary
People might throw you away, but God will never throw you away—and God will never throw away the people who have hurt you. This is what makes forgiveness both complicated and possible. So, what does forgiveness actually mean? Does it require us to forget? To reconcile? To restore a relationship? And what does God ask of us when someone has hurt us?

People might throw you away, but God will never throw you away—and God will never throw away the people who have hurt you. This is what makes forgiveness both complicated and possible.
So, what does forgiveness actually mean? Does it require us to forget? To reconcile? To restore a relationship? And what does God ask of us when someone has hurt us?
In this episode of Perspectives, Rev. Trudy and Rev. Dr. Brittany explore forgiveness through the story of Joseph and his brothers in Genesis 45. Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery, yet years later Joseph chooses to welcome them, provide for them, and seek reconciliation. But does Joseph's story mean that forgiveness is always simple—or that forgiveness always means restoring a relationship? Together, they explore:
- What forgiveness means in Christianity—and why it is more complicated than we sometimes make it
- Why forgiveness can be especially difficult when the people who hurt us are family
- How trauma and memory shape the process of forgiveness
- The difference between forgiveness, reconciliation, and forgetting
- Whether forgiveness requires us to remain in relationship with someone who has hurt us
- How God's grace and providence might help us imagine forgiveness in a complicated world
Reflection Questions
- How does it feel for you to be forgiven? How does it feel when you forgive others?
- What does it take to experience forgiveness?
- How can we imagine God’s activity in a flawed world?
