The Passion According to St. John by J.S. Bach was composed in 1724 and performed during Holy Week at the St. Nicolas Church in Leipzig for the Good Friday Vesper Service. It is written in the style of an  oratorio, with the Evangelist telling the Passion story according to  St. John’s Gospel, the soloists reflecting on those passages from  Scripture, and the choir acting as a “Greek chorus,” participating in the drama of the narrative as well as providing the opening and  closing choruses. In addition to the normal oratorio format,  Bach intersperses Lutheran hymns, called chorales.

    SUPPORT THE MUSIC SERIES

We are so fortunate to receive your generous contributions dedicated to the Cultural Events Committee Music Series. While we always have enthusiastic audiences for these concerts, the free-will offerings, ticket sales and donations at the door simply do not cover the actual expenses of underwriting these excellent performances. Since we are dedicated to producing only high-quality and inspirational events, your donations truly make that possible.

Thank you for your continued support; we look forward to seeing you at the Music Series concerts this season and for many years to come!
