The Masterwork Chorale
We are a non-denominational, community choral group with approximately 120 singers, which joins forces with the Chancel Choir to sing our choral concerts here at First Church.
We perform two major concerts a year—early December and in the spring. Selected musicians from the San Diego Symphony Orchestra accompany our performances.
Join the Masterwork Chorale
All voice parts are welcome and there are no auditions, although singers should have an ability to read moderately difficult music. Members pay a $40 fee per semester to join and also need to bring their own music or purchase at the first rehearsal. Payment due at registration. Make check out to FUMC or register and pay online using PayPal.

Our HistoryThe Masterwork Chorale began as the Hoover Masterwork Chorale in 1969 when Robert Cooper formed and directed a community choir composed of Hoover High School choral students and volunteer adult singers (many of whom were Hoover parents) to perform Ralph Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony in commemoration of San Diego's 200th "birthday"—the establishment of Father Serra's mission in Old Town. That was the auspicious and ambitious beginning of the group which has evolved into our current Masterwork Chorale, based at First United Methodist Church, where Robert Cooper was Director of Music for 25 years. When Stan Wicks took over that position in 1998 he continued the tradition of producing the finest works in the sacred classical repertoire. |
