Polyglots and Translations:
|

| This course will explore the interesting history behind the King James Bible of 1611, which was the culmination of over a century of controversy on the text and meaning of the Bible in English. The Christian rediscovery of biblical Hebrew began only in the 15th century and was part of the "return to the sources" movement embraced by the leaders of the Protestant Reformation. This movement led to the creation of the great polyglot Bible editions, which presented the text of the Bible in several languages in parallel columns, part of an increasing concern to determine the exact text of the Bible and greater accuracy in understanding the meaning of the text. |

Jesus and the Women who
|
![]() |
| Modern biblical criticism has enabled us to develop both a better, more accurate text of the biblical books and a clearer understanding of their historical context. More recently, social criticism and the hermeneutics developed by various interest groups - women, African-Americans and Hispanics, most notably - have given us further insight into the social identity of new testament figures, often allegorized beyond all historical reality. The women who worked with Jesus, or even those who merely encountered him briefly, have taken on three-dimensional reality. In this class we will investigate the reasons they loved him, what Christ and the women taught each other. | ||

The Discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Library which Houses Them (5/16)

| The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of 972 texts from the Hebrew Bible and extra-biblical documents found between 1947 and 1956 on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. The texts are of great religious and historical significance, as they include the oldest known surviving copies of Biblical and extra-biblical documents and preserve evidence of great diversity in late Second Temple Judaism. The scrolls are considered to be one of the most important archaeological finds in modern times. Dr. Kohn, who is recognized as one of the leading authorities on the Dead Sea Scrolls, will bring us up to date on the latest research of the scrolls. |
