Abbot Charles Wright, Prince of Peace Abbey, Oceanside, CA - Reflections on The Saint John's Bible.
Abbot Charles will relate the vital part that Holy Scripture played in St. Benedict's writing of his Rule for Monks and how monasticism, following the Rule of Benedict, offered the freedom and opportunity to so many monastic scholars, calligraphers and artists to accomplish such feats as illuminated Bibles before Guttenberg.
Abbot Charles Wright, O.S.B., was born in Western New York and moved to California with his family in the 1950's. He graduated from La Jolla High School and attended San Diego State University for four years. Abbott Charles worked in Los Angeles for several years and served in the U.S. Army in Germany. After his service time he joined the monastery in Oceanside. (It was called St. Charles Priory at that time). He attended seminaries in Indiana and Oregon respectively. He was ordained in 1970 after receiving a B. A. and M.A. in Theology.
In 1983 the monastery became an abbey and the then Fr. Charles was appointed the Prior – assistant to the Abbot. After the Abbot retired in 1994, Fr. Charles was elected Abbot and has held that position ever since. He conducts retreats, offers spiritual direction and occasionally assists in parish ministry.
