Why a big mission project?”
Rev. Molly Vetter
Several years ago, we named a new goal for our church: doing something significant to be in ministry with people living in poverty in Mid-City San Diego. Many volunteers have spent countless hours getting to know the community, reading with schoolchildren, tutoring refugee students, distributing food and more. Our "big" project continues to take shape through this work.
As Christians, we seek to follow Christ's command to care for our neighbors. Jesus cared especially for the poor, and sent his disciples out to do the same.
Additionally, as United Methodists, our Wesleyan heritage is steeped in concern for people in need. In his ministry in England, John Wesley reclaimed use of an abandoned foundry for programs of mercy for the poor. We're captivated by this vision, and wonder what Wesley's Foundry might look like in San Diego, in the 21st Century. This is what we are seeking to imagine now.
For more about Wesley's Foundry, I invite you to read this sermon by Lord Leslie Griffiths, Dean of Wesley's Chapel in London: www.gbod.org/healthychurches/presentations/griffiths-foundery.pdf
